Zapopan, Jal., March 13.- The Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo took advantage of the hard courts of the WTA 250 Zapopan Open 2021 to win the first WTA singles title of her career, by defeating the sentimental favorite of the local public, the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, in two sets 6-2, 7-5.
With her triumph, the Spanish wins $29,200 USD in prize money, in addition to adding 280 points for the classification of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
The first set lasted 54 minutes, with points up to 40-40 with long tie-breaks, just the kind of play that a counterattack player like Sorribes Tormo, fourth seed, likes, and with this play she achieved breaks in the third and seventh games.
Bouchard, who was seeking the second WTA title of her career, seemed unable to neutralize the solid defense of her rival, neither with deep balls, nor with the power of her serve, nor with the aggressive base-line play that characterizes her.
The frustration of the Canadian, number 144 in the world, reached such a degree that the chair empire withdrew a point for a couple of warnings, the first for abuse of the ball, when she hit it after losing a point , and the second for abuse of the racket, after she smashed it against the ground out of frustration.
Just like that, the champion of the Nürnberg Open in 2014 began the eighth game of the first set with 0-15 against her due to the penalty and the Iberian, number 71, knew how to take advantage of the opportunity to win the set 6-2, before a satisfied public in Zapopan, which filled the 30 percent allowed at the Main Stadium of the Panamerican Tennis Center.
Bouchard, who barely had won a match this year before arriving to Zapopan, seemed totally out of concentration and practically gave away her first serve of the second set, while “S-Torm,” as the Spaniard has also been nicknamed, was the owner of the game.
However, little by little, the Canadian got back her tranquility and began to find the side lines with her excellent backhand, in addition she dared to go to the net, where she did not do so well, however she was able to get Sorribes Tormo out of balance.
Finally, the strategy of Bouchard worked, who achieved her first break of the match in the sixth game of this set, opening the court to the native of Castellón with balls to the sides, preventing her from being solid on the court like she is used to.
The same happened in the eighth game, when it seemed that the Canadian could get an epic comeback, supported by the applause of the Jalisco public, by placing a triple break point in her favor in the eighth game, she took advantage of the first to put herself 5-3 up and with her eyes on the third set.
However, the tireless Iberian, who was a tough wall in this match, returned the favor twice, in the ninth and eleventh games, to place herself 6-5 up, with hard work to resist the attacks of the Canadian, who played her second final in the last six months and just the eighth in her career.
In the end, the defensive play of “S-Torm” turned out to be too much for the Canadian, who took the set in 7-5 and the match in 6-2, 7-5, to win first title of her career, with a big applause from the Zapopan public, who demonstrated their love for good tennis, as they always applauded for good matches, regardless of which of the two players had won.
