Zapopan, Jal., March 13.-
The Australians Ellen Pérez and Astra Sharma marked a new chapter at the Zapopan Open 2021. The third seeds of this WTA 250 tournament became the double champions after defeating in the final the American Desirae Krawczyk and the Mexican Giuliana Olmos with 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 11 minutes.
The most expected day of the tournament came with high expectations and the stakes were high. On court, the championship title was the objective of both couples, but in the stadium a good number of fans gathered together to close an unforgettable week at the Panamerican Tennis Center.
The game started in a stadium with the maximum capacity of 30% public to define the new queens of the tournament, a match in which the first favorites Krawczyk and Olmos clashed with the Australian sensations of the competition.
The Mexican – American duo began the first set hesitantly, as they quickly found themselves down on the scoreboard after being broken in the third and fifth game, respectively, against solid rivals who also made use of their best qualities: the serves.
Sharma, with her physical power, made three aces and made Olmos and Krawczyk uncomfortable with the rest of her serves, while the left-handed Pérez, also making one, as well took advantage of her skillful arm to bother with open services. In less than half an hour the scoreboard already showed 5-1 in favor of the Australians.
Despite the marked disadvantage, Krawczyk and Olmos did not give up as there was still enough to play for adding the support of the public. And it was from here when they made the change, but in the end the set went to Pérez and Sharma 6-4.
The second set looked very balanced, as the four players maintained their serves during the first games. But the Australians took the lead again in the seventh game when they broke Desirae Krawczyk after a long rally that ended with a powerful cross-court backhand from Pérez that hit the net and resulted in their favor, which led to 4-3.
In the final part, the best actual Mexican doubles player (54 in the WTA ranking) and her partner Krawczyk (22), missed the train by not taking advantage of a break point, which helped Pérez and Sharma to close the match with another 6-4 that meant winning their first title as a couple on the hard surface of Zapopan.
The tennis sport once again showed its nobility, as after the last point the fans rose from their seats to applaud and cheer for the new champions of the Zapopan Open 2021, who took away the aspirations of the two Mexican players in the main draw, since they shined in the tournament by eliminating the couple of Renata Zarazúa and Leylah Fernanádez (CAN) and later defeating Giuliana Olmos and Desirae Krawczyk.
Like that the week for Ellen Pérez and Astra Sharma ended in the Zapopan Open 2021. They will leave Jalisco with the title, adding 280 points in the ranking of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and taking home $10,300 USD in prize money
